The Bourbon Everyone Wants but Canât Find
Â
A Legacy of Excellence
Â
For over 200 years, the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, has crafted some of the finest bourbons in the world. Since its founding in 1773, the distillery has earned a stellar reputation for quality, precision, and innovation. With such a storied history, itâs no wonder that Buffalo Trace Bourbon has earned the loyalty of whiskey enthusiasts worldwide. But, despite being produced by one of the most iconic distilleries in America, Buffalo Trace remains a near-impossible find for many. So why is it so hard to get your hands on a bottle?
Â
What Makes Buffalo Trace Bourbon So Special?
Â
Buffalo Trace Bourbon is renowned for its smooth, complex flavor profile. A blend of corn, rye, and malted barley is carefully fermented, distilled, and aged to perfection. The result? A bourbon thatâs rich in vanilla, caramel, and hints of spicy rye, all layered with the warm embrace of oak. This unique combination of ingredients and processes delivers a bourbon thatâs both approachable for newcomers and complex enough for the seasoned connoisseur.
Â
But itâs not just the taste that makes Buffalo Trace so sought-afterâitâs the reputation behind it. With prestigious awards like the San Francisco World Spirits Competitionâs Best Bourbon under its belt, the brand has grown into a symbol of excellence in the whiskey world. More people than ever are eager to grab a bottle, but the reality is that itâs becoming increasingly difficult.
Â
The Exploding Demand for Buffalo Trace
Â
Buffalo Trace is experiencing a boom in popularity, thanks in large part to the surge in whiskey appreciation. Bourbonâs status as an American-made spirit has made it a must-have, and Buffalo Traceâs impeccable reputation has catapulted it to the top. But whatâs driving the shortage?
Â
1. The Slow Aging Process
Â
Bourbon takes time. Unlike vodka or gin, bourbon must be aged for years before itâs ready to drink. Buffalo Traceâs aging process is meticulous, ensuring that the final product is as smooth and flavorful as possible. However, this also means that, even with increased demand, production canât be ramped up quickly. Every bottle requires patience, which is a big part of what makes it so elusive.
Â
2. Limited Distribution
Â
Buffalo Trace is distributed strategically to ensure that each market receives only a set amount. This careful approach keeps the bourbon premium, preventing it from flooding the market. While this preserves the brandâs prestige, it also means that some regions receive fewer bottles than others, making it harder for certain areas to secure stock.
Â
3. The Halo Effect
Â
In the bourbon world, rarity is king. As collectors and enthusiasts covet rare bottles like Pappy Van Winkle or Eagle Rare, the demand for Buffalo Trace itself skyrockets. As the next best thing in the portfolio, Buffalo Trace often gets swept up in the craze surrounding these rarer expressions, leaving fewer bottles available for regular consumers.
Â
4. Secondary Market Resellers
Â
Whiskey collectors and resellers have turned the hunt for Buffalo Trace into a speculative market. Bottles are often snapped up quickly, only to show up at a premium price in the secondary market. This âflippingâ creates an artificial sense of scarcity and inflates prices, making it even harder to buy at retail cost.
